Around the year 1000
A Medieval Crafts Quarter
In the year 2020, an archaeological emergency excavation was carried out in the Sennhof area, revealing structures of simple wooden buildings and commercial installations, numerous semi-finished products, and waste from bone, metal, and glass processing, along with tools. At the base of the Chur Hofhügel in the 11th century, there were workshops and stalls where craftsmen and craftswomen crafted furniture, clothing, and jewelry from materials such as bone, copper, tin, iron, and glass. A rare stone mold with a crucifix and eagle suggests that religious items were also produced here. For making fittings, they primarily used bones from cattle and horses/mules as well as deer antlers. Other industries like textile production, meat processing, leatherworking, and woodwork were also established here, but they are challenging to trace due to the perishable nature of their products.
